FRANKTOWN, COLORADO (BN24) — Five people, including three children, tragically lost their lives in a car crash on Highway 83 south of Denver, Colorado, on Monday afternoon. The crash, which occurred near Franktown at 4:39 p.m., involved a series of collisions between three vehicles and has left the community in mourning.

According to the Colorado State Patrol (CSP), the accident occurred when a black Toyota hatchback, traveling southbound, lost control while driving on the highway. The Toyota veered off the right shoulder before returning to the road and rolling into the northbound lane. As the Toyota continued to travel south, it collided head-on with a tan Ford sedan, which was traveling northbound. The force of the crash caused the Toyota to then strike a black Ford pickup truck, though the pickup sustained only minor damage.
The driver of the Toyota was ejected from the vehicle during the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to CSP officials. Tragically, the Ford sedan, which an adult driver and five juveniles occupied, also suffered catastrophic damage. The adult driver, along with three of the juveniles, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. The two other juveniles were airlifted to a nearby medical facility, their conditions not immediately disclosed.
Fortunately, the driver of the Ford pickup truck involved in the collision was not injured, CSP said.
Authorities have confirmed that the Douglas County coroner’s office will officially identify the deceased once next of kin have been notified, but the crash has already raised numerous questions about what led to the tragic chain of events.
As of Monday evening, the area near mile marker 40.5 on Highway 83, just north of Russellville Road, remained closed while CSP’s Vehicular Crimes Unit led the investigation into the crash. The cause of the Toyota losing control remains unclear, with authorities continuing to gather evidence, including witness statements and surveillance footage, in an effort to determine what led to the collision.
CSP has urged the public to avoid the area as the investigation and cleanup efforts continue. Local drivers were advised to find alternate routes while the highway remains closed.

The devastating crash has sparked an outpouring of grief from the local community and surrounding areas, particularly given the involvement of young children. Emergency responders, local officials, and family members are coping with the aftermath of what has become one of the deadliest crashes in the region this year.
The crash has raised concerns about road safety, especially on Highway 83, a busy route that serves as a key artery between Franktown and other nearby communities. Though the exact cause of the accident remains under investigation, the fact that the Toyota lost control and collided with multiple vehicles has prompted discussions about possible contributing factors such as road conditions, weather, and vehicle maintenance.
Local residents, some of whom witnessed the crash, have called for increased safety measures on the stretch of highway where the accident occurred. “It’s a tragedy, and it could have been prevented,” said one local who spoke on condition of anonymity. “That stretch of road has always been a bit dangerous, and I think the authorities need to look into better signage or even speed limits.”
As investigators work to determine the specifics of the crash, there is also growing concern over the prevalence of fatal car accidents involving multiple vehicles in the region. With traffic fatalities on the rise across the state, local lawmakers have been under pressure to implement more stringent traffic laws, improve infrastructure, and take proactive measures to prevent such tragedies.
The news of the crash has hit the community hard, especially for the families of those involved. Local churches and community organizations have begun organizing support services for the victims’ families and emergency responders. “Our hearts go out to the families of those lost in this devastating accident,” said a spokesperson for the Franktown Community Center. “We’re here to support them in any way we can during this difficult time.”
In addition, social media tributes have poured in from friends and family of the victims, sharing memories of the children and adults who perished in the crash. The community has rallied around the families, offering condolences and support as they begin the grieving process.
While the investigation continues, the crash has highlighted broader issues surrounding vehicle safety, especially in crashes involving multiple cars. The Colorado State Patrol has reminded drivers to stay alert and follow safety protocols, especially during busy travel hours when road conditions can be unpredictable.
The incident has prompted renewed discussions about the importance of ensuring all vehicles on the road are properly maintained, as well as the responsibility of drivers to make safe decisions, especially when navigating dangerous or unfamiliar stretches of road.
As authorities continue their investigation into this heartbreaking incident, the loss of five lives, including three children, has cast a shadow over the Franktown area and beyond. The crash is a painful reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of road safety, particularly on highways that connect small communities.
While questions remain about the cause of the accident, the grief felt by the families and the local community is undeniable. With the investigation ongoing, Colorado residents are urged to keep the victims’ families in their thoughts and continue to drive with caution to prevent further tragedies on the state’s roadways.
