Then just 19 years old, Saka’s missed penalty had sealed Italy’s victory and led to a torrent of racial abuse directed at him and fellow Black players Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho on social media.
This time, Saka stepped up confidently to take England’s third penalty. He found the bottom corner of the net, cupping his ears in celebration. His successful conversion contributed to England’s 5-3 shootout victory, with Trent Alexander-Arnold scoring the decisive penalty.
After the match, Saka spoke about embracing the pressure and his determination to overcome past setbacks. “You can fail once but you have a choice if you put yourself in that position or not again,” he said, emphasizing his belief in himself and his joy at seeing the ball hit the back of the net.
