FIFA Rankings: Nigeria’s National Soccer Team Super Eagles Drop to 39th Globally, Remain 5th in Africa

The Super Eagles of Nigeria have dropped again by one place from 38th to 39th in the world based on FIFA’s latest rankings, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

According to the list released on Thursday by the world football governing body, the three-time African champions remained the fifth-best team on the continent.

The update in rankings comes after the conclusion of recent international competitions, including the European Championships in Germany and the Copa America in the USA.

In June, Nigeria dropped eight spots in the global rankings, undoing the impressive points accumulated at the African Cup of Nations earlier this year.

The considerable drop was due to uninspiring results in the latest round of games of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. The Eagles drew 1-1 against South Africa in their fourth game of the qualifiers and lost 2-1 to the Benin Republic in the following match.

In the ranking table by the world football governing body, the Nigerian team still maintained the 1,498.93 points coefficient they had in June.

The top three nations remain unchanged on the continent, with Morocco (14) top ahead of Senegal (19) and Egypt (36) respectively. Ivory Coast are 38th on the latest rankings, placing them fourth in Africa.

Argentina, which successfully defended their Copa America title last weekend, retained the top spot globally ahead of second-placed France.
