Spain Overcomes 2-0 Deficit to Beat Colombia 4-2 on Penalties in Olympic Soccer Quarterfinal

World champion Spain secured a dramatic victory over Colombia in the Olympic women’s soccer quarterfinals, winning 4-2 on penalties after a thrilling comeback at Stade de Lyon. The match, which ended 2-2 after extra time, saw Spain fight back from a two-goal deficit to force the shootout.

Colombia initially took control of the match, with Mayra Ramirez opening the scoring in the 12th minute and Leicy Santos doubling their lead in the 52nd. However, Spain’s resilience shone through as Jenni Hermoso sparked a comeback with a goal in the 79th minute. Irene Paredes then forced extra time with an equalizer deep into stoppage time.

In the penalty shootout, Spain’s goalkeeper Cata Coll made a crucial save against Catalina Usme’s weak attempt. Liana Salazar’s miss for Colombia, sending her shot over the bar, further tilted the odds in Spain’s favor. Ballon d’Or winner Aitana Bonmati sealed the victory for Spain by converting the decisive spot kick.

The match was not without its challenges for Colombia, as star player Linda Caicedo was stretchered off with an injury in the 66th minute when her team was still leading 2-0.

This victory marks a significant achievement for Spain, participating in its first Olympics. The team will face either France or Brazil in the semifinals in Marseille on Tuesday, keeping alive their hopes of completing a remarkable double after winning the Women’s World Cup in Australia last year.

The match showcased Spain’s determination and ability to perform under pressure, traits that will be crucial as they advance to the latter stages of the Olympic tournament. As the competition intensifies, Spain’s blend of world-class talent and fighting spirit positions them as strong contenders for Olympic gold.
