Russian Military Blogger Jailed for Criticizing Ukraine War

Date:

A prominent Russian military blogger, known for his critical views on the country’s armed forces, has been sentenced to six years in prison. Sergei Dovblyas, also known by his online pseudonym “Sergeant,” was found guilty of “discrediting the armed forces,” a charge that carries severe penalties under Russian law.

Dovblyas, 40, was arrested in May after his blog posts criticizing military operations in Ukraine went viral. He accused the Russian military leadership of incompetence and corruption, alleging that their actions had led to unnecessary casualties and strategic failures.

The court in Moscow heard that Dovblyas’s writings had a significant following, with thousands of readers on various social media platforms. Prosecutors argued that his posts undermined public trust in the military and contributed to a negative perception of Russia’s ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Dovblyas defended his right to free speech, claiming that his criticisms were aimed at improving the armed forces and holding leaders accountable. “My intention was never to discredit the brave men and women serving our country, but to highlight the systemic issues that endanger their lives and our national security,” he stated during the trial.

Human rights organizations have condemned the verdict, labeling it as a blatant attempt to silence dissent and restrict freedom of expression. Amnesty International called for Dovblyas’s immediate release, arguing that his imprisonment violates international human rights standards.
