IOM Urges Global Action as Sudan Faces Largest Displacement Crisis, Warns of Potential Catastrophe

GENEVA, Switzerland – The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has issued an urgent appeal for global donations to address the escalating displacement crisis in Sudan, warning that failure to act swiftly could result in tens of thousands of preventable deaths.

The crisis, described as the world’s largest displacement situation, has left millions of Sudanese in desperate need of aid.

During a briefing on Tuesday, Mohamed Refaat, who leads the IOM’s mission in Sudan, revealed that the organization has only received 21% of the necessary funds to provide critical assistance to those affected.

“The international community is not doing enough,” Refaat stated. “Without an immediate massive and coordinated global response, we risk witnessing tens of thousands of preventable deaths in the coming months.”

The situation in Sudan is dire, with one in five people displaced due to ongoing conflict. According to the IOM, 10.7 million people are internally displaced within Sudan, and an additional 2.3 million have fled across international borders.

The conflict, which erupted in April 2023, has unleashed widespread ethnic violence and created famine-like conditions in many parts of the country.

The IOM warns that without substantial and immediate international support, the humanitarian crisis could spiral further out of control, leading to catastrophic loss of life.

As the global community grapples with multiple crises, the IOM’s call to action emphasizes the urgent need for a coordinated response to prevent a full-scale humanitarian disaster in Sudan.
