A church roof collapse in the coastal city of Recife, Brazil, on Friday has resulted in at least two deaths, according to city hall and state authorities. The incident occurred during a food distribution event at the church.
Priscila Krause, the vice-governor of Pernambuco state, confirmed that approximately 20 people had received medical assistance following the collapse. Krause stated that while authorities do not believe there are additional fatalities, they will conduct a thorough search through the rubble as a precautionary measure.
“Around 20 people had received medical assistance after the collapse,” Krause said. She added, “Authorities do not believe there are additional fatalities.”
The vice-governor also noted that at the time of the collapse, the church was being used for food distribution, highlighting the tragic circumstances of the event.
