Palestinian Militants Kill Three Israeli Police Officers in West Bank Attack

Palestinian militants killed three Israeli police officers on Sunday in an attack on a vehicle in the occupied West Bank, further escalating tensions in a region that has seen increased violence since the outbreak of the war in Gaza.

The attack occurred along a road in the southern West Bank, away from the northern areas where Israel has been conducting large-scale military operations in recent days. Israeli police confirmed that all three casualties were officers and stated that the assailants managed to escape after the attack.

A relatively unknown militant group calling itself the Khalil al-Rahman Brigade claimed responsibility for the assault. Hamas, the militant group controlling Gaza, praised the attack as a “natural response” to the ongoing war and called for more such actions.

This incident comes amid a surge of violence in the West Bank following Hamas’ October 7 attack on Israel, which sparked the current conflict in Gaza. Since then, over 650 Palestinians have been killed in the West Bank, primarily during Israeli military arrest raids. While most of the casualties appear to be militants involved in gunbattles with Israeli forces, civilian bystanders and protesters have also been among the dead.

The past ten months have seen an increase in both settler violence directed at Palestinians and Palestinian attacks on Israelis in the West Bank. The region, along with the Gaza Strip and East Jerusalem, was captured by Israel during the 1967 Mideast war. Palestinians seek these territories for their future state, but meaningful peace talks have been stalled for more than 15 years.

Israel has established over 100 settlements across the West Bank, housing more than 500,000 Israeli citizens. These settlements, which range from small outposts to town-like communities, are considered illegal by most of the international community.

The attack highlights the complex and volatile situation in the West Bank, where approximately 3 million Palestinians live under Israeli military rule, with the Western-backed Palestinian Authority exercising limited autonomy in population centers.

Israeli authorities have not yet released details about potential suspects or the specific circumstances of the attack. The incident is likely to prompt increased security measures and potentially more intense military operations in the West Bank.
