Canadian-Nigerian Woman Arrested for Alleged Hate-Motivated Threats Against Nigerian Community

Toronto Police have arrested a Canadian-Nigerian woman for allegedly making hate-motivated threats against members of the Nigerian community. Amaka Sonnberger, 46, is scheduled to appear in court on Monday, September 2, 2024, following her arrest on Sunday.

According to a statement released by the Toronto Police Service early Monday morning, Sonnberger was taken into custody on September 1, 2024, after an investigation into online content she reportedly posted on August 25. The content allegedly threatened violence against specific members of the Nigerian community.

The police received a report about the threatening incident on August 28, 2024, prompting an investigation. Sonnberger has been charged with uttering threats and will face a judge at the Ontario Court of Justice, located at 2201 Finch Avenue West.

The case is being treated as a suspected hate-motivated offence, with the Toronto Police Hate Crime Unit involved in the investigation. This classification underscores the seriousness with which authorities are treating the alleged threats.
