Single-Engine Plane Crash on New York Interstate Claims Life, Disrupts Major Highway

Date:

A fatal small plane crash on Interstate 684 in Westchester County, New York, resulted in one death and one injury Thursday evening, transforming a major commuter route into an emergency landing site approximately 25 miles northeast of Manhattan.

The aircraft went down at approximately 7 p.m. in Harrison, striking the highway’s center median and prompting an immediate closure of all traffic lanes. Emergency responders found the damaged white aircraft resting against the guardrail, surrounded by response vehicles.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul confirmed that Department of Environmental Conservation teams were dispatched to manage aviation fuel spillage from the crash site. The incident highlights ongoing concerns about small aircraft safety in the densely populated New York metropolitan area.

The crash location’s proximity to several regional airports has drawn attention from aviation safety investigators, though the plane’s origin and intended destination have not yet been disclosed by authorities.

Transportation officials have not announced when the heavily-trafficked interstate, which serves as a crucial north-south corridor for New York commuters, will reopen to traffic.
