Jack Smith Resigns from DOJ After Completing Trump Investigations

Date:

Special counsel Jack Smith resigned from the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) on Friday after concluding his work on two criminal investigations related to President-elect Donald Trump. The resignation was confirmed in a court filing submitted by DOJ officials to U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon on Saturday.

The filing, first reported by Politico’s Josh Gerstein, included a third footnote stating, “The Special Counsel completed his work and submitted his final confidential report on January 7, 2025, and separated from the Department on January 10.”

Smith’s resignation marks the end of his role overseeing the high-profile investigations into Trump’s actions.
