According to two Iraqi security sources who spoke to Reuters and DailyMail.com, the town of Zummar in Iraq fired at least five rockets towards a U.S. military base in northeastern Syria on Sunday.
This attack against U.S. forces marks the first incident since early February, when Iranian-backed groups in Iraq halted their attacks on U.S. troops.
A senior army officer and two security sources confirmed the presence of a rocket launcher on a small truck in Zummar, a town bordering Syria.
The military official stated that the truck caught fire, with an explosion from unfired rockets occurring simultaneously as warplanes were in the sky.
We can’t confirm that the truck was bombed by U.S. warplanes unless we investigate it,” the military official said, speaking on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the incident.
This latest attack on U.S. troops occurs just one day after an explosion damaged a pro-Iranian militia’s military base in Iraq, killing one and wounding eight others.
Tension in the Middle East is currently at an all-time high as the Gaza War continues, and the possibility of a confrontation between Israel and Iran seems increasingly likely.
Following an Israeli attack on Iran’s Consulate in Damascus, Syria, earlier this month that resulted in the deaths of two Iranian generals, Iran responded with a series of strikes on Israel on April 13, most of which were deflected by Israel’s Iron Dome.
The U.S., a major ally of Israel, also assisted in shooting down Iranian drone strikes.
On April 19, Israel launched an airstrike against a major airbase and nuclear site in central Iran. Now, both countries appear to be downplaying their attacks on each other in an effort to avoid a wider conflict in the region.
