Florida Woman’s Driveway Removed in Alleged Nigeria Linked Real Estate Scam

Date:

A Florida homeowner returned to an unexpected scene earlier this year after discovering that her driveway had been demolished by contractors who believed they had been hired by a legitimate real estate company, investigators say.

Police in Sanford said the unusual incident was part of an alleged fraud scheme that investigators traced to online activity originating in Nigeria.

Authorities said scammers posing as representatives of a real estate company hired a contractor to replace a homeowner’s driveway using a fraudulent payment. The contractor stopped work after the payment failed, leaving the property with a partially demolished driveway before the homeowner was eventually compensated for the damage.

What We Know So Far

Luz Lenzi told News 6 that she returned to her Sanford home, about 30 miles north of Orlando, in February to find her driveway torn apart and replaced with a large pile of rubble.

“I didn’t hire them. I didn’t need to have my driveway redone,” Lenzi told the television station.

According to Sanford police, someone claiming to represent a real estate company contacted a contractor and arranged for work to replace the driveway.

The contractor began the project after receiving what appeared to be a $15,000 payment. However, work stopped when the check was returned unpaid.

Investigators said the payment was issued by a company identified as SOIL Realty LLC, which was listed with a New Mexico address.

Police later subpoenaed bank records connected to the transaction and obtained Google account records linked to the email address used during the negotiations.

According to investigators, the digital trail ultimately led to internet protocol addresses in Nigeria.

Lenzi said she was stunned when detectives explained where the investigation had led.

“I said, Nigeria, like in Africa? And he said, yes. I said, how? I was shocked,” she recalled.

Authorities also found that the contractor had not met the individual who ordered the work in person and had not obtained the required permit before beginning construction.

Investigators have not determined exactly how the suspected scammers intended to profit from the scheme.

Police believe the contractor, rather than the homeowner, may have been the primary target. Detectives suspect the fraudsters attempted to obtain services or money from the contractor using counterfeit payment while selecting Lenzi’s property because it had been listed for sale.

Initially, the contractor declined to repair the damaged driveway, maintaining that the company had also been deceived.

Lenzi later told News 6 that the contractor agreed to reimburse her for the repairs.

The contractor declined to comment when contacted by News 6.

What Authorities Are Saying

Sanford police said their investigation indicates the homeowner was not the intended victim of the fraud.

Instead, detectives believe the suspects used the property’s public listing information to make the work request appear legitimate before presenting fraudulent payment to the contractor.

The investigation remains ongoing.

Why This Matters

The case illustrates how increasingly sophisticated fraud schemes are exploiting publicly available real estate information to target contractors and service providers.

Properties listed for sale often contain photographs, addresses and ownership information that criminals can use to impersonate sellers or property managers when requesting construction or maintenance work.

Law enforcement agencies have warned contractors to verify customer identities before beginning expensive projects, particularly when transactions involve remote communications, unfamiliar clients or advance payments that cannot be immediately verified.

The incident also highlights the financial risks created when work begins before permits are secured or payment has fully cleared. While the homeowner ultimately recovered her repair costs, both she and the contractor experienced significant financial disruption because of the alleged scheme.

What Happens Next

Detectives continue investigating the individuals responsible for the fraudulent transactions and are working to determine whether similar schemes have targeted other contractors or homeowners.

Authorities are also encouraging contractors to confirm ownership records, verify client identities in person whenever possible and ensure payments have cleared before beginning substantial construction projects.

Although the digital evidence has been traced to Nigeria, investigators have not announced whether any suspects have been identified or whether criminal charges are expected.

This case reflects a growing trend in international fraud operations that rely less on directly stealing from homeowners and more on manipulating legitimate businesses into performing services under false pretenses. Publicly available property records and online real estate listings provide criminals with valuable information that can make fraudulent requests appear credible.

As cross border cyber fraud becomes increasingly sophisticated, verification procedures by contractors, financial institutions and property owners are becoming an essential defense against scams that blur the line between digital deception and physical property damage.
