“The Provocateur,” a provocative new exhibit by renowned German photographer Ellen von Unwerth, features never-before-seen nude photographs of celebrities like Rihanna, Kate Moss, and Demi Moore.
The collection, currently on display at the Staley-Wise Gallery in New York City, features a series of sultry images captured throughout von Unwerth’s illustrious career.
Among the most striking photographs is a 2014 shot of Rihanna standing topless in the shower, wearing only white briefs.
Another image from 1995 shows a shirtless Kate Moss, now 50, seductively staring at the camera, her towel wrapped around her waist.
The exhibit also includes a 2004 snapshot of model Elle Macpherson, now 60, sitting nude on a toilet with a roll of toilet paper strategically placed across her chest.
Other notable photographs include a 1996 image of actress Demi Moore, 61, lounging on a couch in lingerie and fishnet tights as a man places a mask on her face, and a 2005 picture of Zoë Kravitz leaning over a bowl in a black mask.
The star-studded gallery also features appearances by David Bowie, Karl Lagerfeld, Christy Turlington, Linda Evangelista, and Cara Delevingne.
According to the exhibit’s description, “The photographs reflect a liberated and irrepressible engagement with her subjects that the photographer has championed for her entire career.
These exhibition images portray a winking provocateur. Instead of being the object of lust, these images portray a playful instigator who is both innocent and naughty.
While eroticism is at the forefront of many of these images, fantasy and humor unite von Unwerth’s vision of her subjects simply having fun—with each other and with the viewer, whom they tease, taunt, and provoke.”
Ellen von Unwerth, who began her career as a model before transitioning to photography, shared her approach to making her subjects feel at ease: “I know what it’s like when you feel uncomfortable, so I do everything in my power to make them feel at ease—and to live, laugh, and move.”
