According to a Fox News report, King Charles III and Prince William have presented a united front in distancing themselves from Prince Harry, effectively “freezing him out” in the midst of the Duke of Sussex’s recent trip to Nigeria with his wife, Meghan Markle.
Christopher Andersen, author of “The King,” claims that the royal father and son have chosen to ignore Harry and not let him “get under their skin” as they face numerous critical challenges. “In a way, I think that is even sadder. It’s been said that hate isn’t the opposite of love – indifference is,” Andersen remarked.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex visited the West African nation from May 10-12 for the first time, upon invitation from the Nigerian military. Andersen told Fox News Digital that the king and Prince William are not surprised by Harry’s trips abroad, even when Meghan accompanies him, and they do not begrudge his ties to Africa. “Charles and William have crossed Harry off their list for a plethora of reasons, but making a brief trip with one reporter and one photographer in tow isn’t one of them,” he added.
During his recent visit to London for the 10th anniversary of the Invictus Games, Harry did not meet with his father, who was reportedly too busy with official duties after being sidelined for three months due to cancer. A spokesperson for the Duke of Sussex said that Harry “is understanding of his father’s commitments and various other priorities and hopes to see him soon.”
Harry, who has a strained relationship with his family, rushed to London in February for a brief visit following the 75-year-old monarch’s cancer diagnosis. Since quitting royal duties in 2020 and moving to California with Meghan, citing unbearable intrusions and racist attitudes from the British media, Harry has seen his father infrequently and has detailed their rocky relationship in TV interviews, a documentary, and his memoir, “Spare.”
Royal author Tom Quinn recently told the UK’s Mirror that the king and his heir were “furious” about the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s trip to Nigeria, but Andersen dismissed this notion. “One reporter and one photographer do not a royal tour make,” he explained, noting that Harry and Meghan have significantly scaled back their entourage and sought to make their appearances abroad seem as informal and unofficial as possible.
Andersen emphasized that the royal family is currently united in its determination to act as if Harry and Meghan do not exist, expressing hope that this stance will not last forever and that either William or the king will be courageous enough to accept the olive branch Harry repeatedly extends to them. He suggested that finding a legitimate part-time royal role for Harry and his family could be a significant boost for the monarchy during a time when they need all the help they can get.
Kinsey Schofield, host of the To Di For Daily podcast, told Fox News Digital that the royals were not surprised by the couple’s high-profile visit and that ignoring Prince Harry has brought the family much-needed peace. She claimed that the royal family is distancing themselves from the Sussexes to make it clear that they are not associated with them and do not endorse their efforts.
However, royal expert Ian Pelham Turner argued that the Sussexes are entitled to publicly champion causes that speak to them, with or without the monarchy’s support. He noted that Harry and Meghan are adored and more popular in worlds that care and share values for people of color, suggesting that if the king and William are indeed furious over the visit, many people around the world may advise them to simply “get a life.”
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex currently reside in Montecito, California, with their two children.
