Authorities have detained a suspect in connection with a series of stabbings in Massachusetts that left four young girls injured at a movie theater and two more people wounded at a fast food restaurant on Saturday. The suspect, who has not been named, allegedly carried out the attacks in different towns within an hour.
The initial incident occurred around 6 p.m. at an AMC theater in Braintree. According to Braintree Police, the suspect attacked four girls, aged 9 to 17, without warning or provocation. “Without saying anything and without any warning, he suddenly attacked and stabbed the four young females. The attack appeared to be unprovoked,” the police stated. Following the attack, the assailant fled the scene in a vehicle.
The injured girls were transported to Boston hospitals and are expected to survive, authorities confirmed.
Surveillance footage from the theater enabled police to identify the suspect’s vehicle, a black SUV. Shortly after, a similar vehicle was reportedly involved in another stabbing incident at a McDonald’s in Plymouth, about 30 minutes south of Braintree.
In this second attack, which occurred about an hour later, a 21-year-old woman and a 29-year-old man were stabbed. Both were taken to local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries, according to Massachusetts State Police.
“Preliminary investigation suggests a likely connection to an earlier incident at a movie theatre in Braintree resulting in non-life-threatening injuries to four juveniles,” state police said.
The suspect led police on a chase that ended in a crash in Sandwich, roughly 25 minutes south of Plymouth. He is currently being treated at a nearby hospital. The investigation, involving both state and local police, remains “active and ongoing.”
The AMC theater was placed on lockdown immediately following the incident, according to an employee who spoke to CNN.
