Boxing legend Mike Tyson experienced a medical emergency during a flight from Miami to Los Angeles on Sunday, his representatives have confirmed. The 57-year-old former heavyweight champion felt nauseous and dizzy, prompting flight staff to request medical assistance from any onboard doctors.
Upon the plane’s arrival in Los Angeles, paramedics boarded to provide immediate treatment. The flight had already faced a two-hour delay in Miami due to extreme heat. Tyson’s health scare comes just two months before his scheduled fight with 27-year-old YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul in Dallas.
“Thankfully, Mr. Tyson is doing great,” his representatives told The New York Post. “He became nauseous and dizzy due to an ulcer flare-up 30 minutes before landing. He is appreciative of the medical staff who were there to help him.”
Ulcer flare-ups typically present symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, bloating, belching, gas pain, chest pain, and fatigue. The incident was first reported by In Touch on Monday morning, revealing that Tyson had a medical emergency on the plane and required paramedics upon landing.
According to sources, the cabin crew made an announcement asking for a doctor 30 minutes before landing, and the message appeared on passengers’ screens. An eyewitness in an exit row near first class recounted, “They asked us to stay on the plane after landing so paramedics could enter. The stewardess mentioned, ‘He’s a really important passenger, so we want to make sure he’s OK.’ I mouthed ‘Mike Tyson,’ and she nodded yes.”
After landing at LAX, paramedics treated Tyson for approximately 25 minutes. Tyson, known for his daily marijuana use, has temporarily given up the drug while training for his fight against Paul, as it is listed as a banned substance by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation.
“He only stopped to follow all of the rules,” Tyson’s publicist Joann Mignano recently told USA TODAY Sports. “But he is still a strong advocate for the medicinal benefits of cannabis for his personal well-being and others like him.”
Tyson, who will turn 58 on July 20, is set to fight Paul at AT&T Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys. The fight has sparked criticism due to the significant age difference between the two fighters.
“I don’t see too many people critical about it. Look at this,” Tyson said at a recent press conference. When a reporter suggested there were critics, Tyson challenged, “Who? Name me somebody. You? Who?”
The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation is sanctioning the fight as a professional bout, featuring eight two-minute rounds instead of the usual 10 or 12 three-minute rounds. The gloves will also be heavier, at 14 ounces instead of 10, to reduce the impact of punches.
Tyson retired in 2005 but returned for an exhibition match against Roy Jones Jr. in November 2020, which was not classified as a professional fight. Despite his recent health scare, Tyson remains focused on his upcoming match and the potential to fill AT&T Stadium.
“I was doing this years ago, so this is nothing new to me,” said Tyson, who won 50 fights with 44 knockouts before retiring. “This is new to this young boy over here.”
