A San Diego Police Department officer, Anthony Hair, has resigned following an internal investigation into an incident where he accidentally locked himself in the back seat of his patrol car with a female suspect who had propositioned him for sex. The embarrassing findings from the probe have now been made public by the police department.
The incident occurred last August when Hair and other officers arrested two people for alleged car theft. While transporting the female suspect to the local jail in San Diego, Hair turned on his body camera, capturing their conversation.
During the exchange, the woman inquired about Hair’s marital status and bluntly stated, “I’m down to f*** right now.” Shocked by her proposition, Hair ordered her not to talk that way, reminding her that their discussion was being recorded.
After a few minutes, Hair switched off his body camera, and his police cruiser slowed to a crawl as he turned down a dark road, according to the GPS tracking system on his vehicle. The car suddenly came to a halt, and about 20 minutes later, Hair radioed another officer requesting the master key for all patrol cars.
The other officer, questioned by Internal Affairs investigators, revealed that Hair was panicked when he confessed to being locked in the back of his patrol car with the woman. A police supervisor responded and unlocked the car door. Hair claimed to Internal Affairs that the door had accidentally shut after he got into the back seat to check on the suspect and that his body camera had somehow been knocked off his clip as he emerged from the vehicle.
The female suspect maintained that she did not have sex with Hair in the back seat that night. However, Internal Affairs investigators uncovered the truth when they tested Hair’s clothes for semen and found traces of it on his belt. Hair subsequently resigned from the police force in September 2023.
The release of the body camera footage and the findings of the internal investigation have brought the incident to public attention, highlighting the importance of professional conduct and integrity within law enforcement.
