Nigerian Pastor Assaults Wife Who Accused Him of Infidelity, Seeks Divorce

Modupe, the wife of Pastor Akintunde, the founder and lead pastor of an evangelical ministry based in Lagos State, Nigeria, has accused her husband of physically assaulting her following her allegations of his infidelity with two female church members. The couple, who reside in the Onosa community of Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Area, have been married for several years and have five children together.

According to Punch Metro, a Nigerian national newspaper, the couple’s marital issues began when Modupe confronted Akintunde about his alleged romantic involvement with two women from their congregation. In response to these accusations, Modupe claims that her husband slapped and beat her, causing her to lose consciousness during one of the attacks, which led to her hospitalization.

Modupe revealed that her marriage has deteriorated, with Akintunde accusing her of influencing church members to leave due to the adultery allegations. As a result, he has reportedly sent her away from their matrimonial home and is currently seeking a divorce.

Recounting the events that led to the confrontations, Modupe stated that she first became aware of her husband’s alleged affair when she contracted an infection from him. When confronted with Akintunde, he admitted to experiencing similar symptoms, and they sought treatment from their nurse. The same nurse later informed Modupe that she had treated a female church member for the same infection, confirming the illicit relationship.

The situation escalated when Modupe confronted Akintunde about a second alleged affair with another female church member. According to reports, the woman’s fiancé informed other members of the congregation, causing some to stop attending church. Akintunde, angered by the accusations, ordered Modupe to leave their home.

Despite briefly returning to spend time with her children during the festive period in December 2023, Modupe claimed that her husband locked her in a room for two hours. In April 2024, while at the matrimonial home after delivering a baby for a client, Modupe alleged that Akintunde attacked her until she fainted, pressing her neck and leaving her unconscious. Neighbors called her family members, who took her to the hospital for treatment.

Akintunde, when contacted, denied the allegations but confirmed that efforts were underway to divorce his wife. He claimed that Modupe had attempted to injure him and cut his private parts, stating that she had once threatened to ensure his organ would not work for anyone else if it did not work for her. Akintunde also mentioned that Modupe had reported the case to the Epe Division, but she and her family members failed to appear when asked to meet at the court.

In regards to the infidelity allegations, Akintunde, a pastor, claimed that Modupe would bully anyone she saw him with. He expressed his desire to divorce her, stating that the case was already in court.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed that the case had been charged to court, noting that there was evidence of Akintunde assaulting his wife.

As the case unfolds, the couple’s marital troubles have come to light, highlighting the challenges faced by some religious leaders and their families. The allegations of infidelity and domestic violence have not only affected the couple but have also had an impact on their congregation and the wider community.
