Carlos Alcaraz Defeats Jannik Sinner in Five-Set Thriller, Reaches First French Open Final

In a thrilling five-set battle, Carlos Alcaraz emerged victorious against Jannik Sinner, winning 2-6, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 to reach his first French Open final. The 21-year-old Spaniard became the youngest man to reach a Grand Slam title match on three different surfaces, having previously won the U.S. Open in 2022 on hard courts and Wimbledon in 2023 on grass.

Alcaraz, the No. 3 seed, will face either Alexander Zverev or Casper Ruud in Sunday’s final, marking the first men’s title match at the French Open since 2004 without any of the “Big Three” – Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, or Roger Federer.

Despite Sinner’s impressive 13-0 record in Grand Slam play in 2024, including his Australian Open victory in January, the 22-year-old Italian struggled with a lingering hip injury that forced him to sit out the clay-court tournament in Rome last month.

Throughout the match, Alcaraz demonstrated his resilience, bouncing back from deficits and showcasing his versatility with a mix of drop shots, lobs, and passing shots. In the fifth set, Alcaraz took control, breaking Sinner’s serve early and never looking back.

The semifinal match between Zverev and Ruud was also highly anticipated, with both players seeking their first Grand Slam title. Zverev, who reached an out-of-court settlement in his domestic abuse case earlier in the day, has been the runner-up at the 2020 U.S. Open and lost in the French Open semifinals each of the past three years. Ruud, meanwhile, is a three-time finalist at majors, including losses to Nadal in the 2022 French Open and Djokovic in the 2023 edition.

As the future of men’s tennis, Alcaraz and Sinner delivered a captivating match that showcased their immense talent and potential, despite combining for 102 unforced errors. The Court Philippe Chatrier crowd was treated to moments of brilliance, with dueling chants of each man’s first name echoing throughout the stadium.

With his victory, Alcaraz solidifies his position as one of the brightest young stars in the sport and will now have the opportunity to claim his third Grand Slam title on the red clay of Roland Garros.
