Diddy Returns New York City Key Amid Controversy Over Cassie Assault Video

Sean “Diddy” Combs has returned his key to New York City following a request from Mayor Eric Adams, amidst controversy stemming from a video depicting the music mogul assaulting R&B singer Cassie, officials confirmed on Saturday.

According to the mayor’s office, Adams sent letters to Combs’ offices in New York and California on June 4, requesting the return of the key and condemning the actions seen in the video. The key was subsequently received by City Hall on June 10.

In his letter, Adams expressed deep concern over the assault, stating, “I strongly condemn these actions and stand in solidarity with all survivors of domestic and gender-based violence.”

Combs has faced significant setbacks in his career, including allegations of sexual abuse and a federal sex-trafficking investigation that led to raids on his mansions in Los Angeles and Miami.

The controversy escalated when CNN aired security footage in May showing Combs attacking Cassie in a hotel hallway in Los Angeles back in 2016. Following public backlash, Combs publicly apologized, describing his actions as “inexcusable” and expressing remorse. Cassie, legally known as Cassandra Ventura, filed a lawsuit against Combs last year, leading to heightened scrutiny and a swift settlement of the case within a day of its filing.

Previously honored by Adams with a key to the city during an album release ceremony, Combs faced further repercussions this month as Howard University rescinded an honorary degree and terminated a scholarship program named after him in response to the assault video.

As the founder of Bad Boy Records, Combs has been a pivotal figure in hip-hop for over three decades, leveraging his musical success into a formidable business empire. Despite attempts to reach Combs’ representatives for comment, responses have not been forthcoming.

The unfolding controversy continues to impact Combs’ reputation and career trajectory, highlighting ongoing discussions around accountability and consequences in cases of domestic violence within high-profile circles.
