Atalanta Plays 0-0 with Arsenal Play in Champions League Opener

Arsenal and Atalanta battled to a 0-0 draw in their UEFA Champions League group stage opener on Thursday night, with Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya emerging as the hero after saving a second-half penalty.

In a tightly contested match at the Gewiss Stadium, both teams struggled to create clear-cut chances. Arsenal dominated possession in the early stages, with Bukayo Saka’s driven free-kick providing their best opportunity in the first half.

Atalanta, last season’s Europa League winners, grew into the game as it progressed. Charles De Ketelaere had the hosts’ first significant chance around the 30-minute mark, firing wide from the edge of the box.

The game’s pivotal moment came two minutes into the second half when Arsenal’s Thomas Partey conceded a penalty. However, Raya produced a spectacular double save, denying Mateo Retegui from the spot and then blocking the follow-up attempt.

Atalanta continued to press, with substitute Juan Cuadrado curling a 20-yard effort just over the crossbar. Arsenal introduced Raheem Sterling late in the game in search of a winner, and the winger’s through ball set up Gabriel Martinelli for a close-range shot that sailed over the bar.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta will likely be satisfied with his team’s defensive solidity away from home, though the lack of attacking potency may be a concern. For Atalanta, the result represents a solid start to their Champions League campaign against a formidable opponent.

The draw leaves both teams with a point in their opening Group F fixture, setting the stage for an intriguing battle for qualification as the tournament progresses.
