BOULDER, Colo. — The FBI has launched a terrorism investigation following what authorities are calling a “targeted terror attack” at a popular pedestrian mall in Boulder, Colorado on Sunday afternoon. The incident left several people injured, some seriously, and disrupted a busy weekend scene on Pearl Street.
The assault occurred near a public gathering to honor Israeli hostages held in Gaza, adding to early concerns that the incident may have had political or ideological motivations. However, officials stressed that it is still too early to draw definitive conclusions.
FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed that federal authorities are fully engaged in what he described as a targeted act of terror. In a statement posted to X (formerly Twitter), Patel wrote: “We are aware of and fully investigating a targeted terror attack in Boulder, Colorado. Our agents and local law enforcement are on the scene already, and we will share updates as more information becomes available.”
Patel offered no additional details on the suspect or possible motives, while emphasizing that the incident is being taken seriously at the highest levels of federal law enforcement.
Boulder Police Chief Stephen Redfearn confirmed that the suspect was apprehended and hospitalized, but declined to release the individual’s identity pending further investigation.
“There are multiple victims with injuries ranging from very serious to more minor,” Redfearn said during a press briefing. “This was a beautiful Sunday afternoon in downtown Boulder on Pearl Street and this act was unacceptable.”
Redfearn urged caution and patience, warning against premature conclusions: “It would be irresponsible for me to speculate on motive this early on.”
The attack occurred at the Pearl Street Mall, a popular outdoor destination known for drawing tourists, families, and University of Colorado students. The area was particularly busy due to a nearby demonstration in support of Israeli hostages, although officials have not confirmed whether that event was related to the violence.
Witnesses are being interviewed, and police tape cordoned off multiple city blocks as investigators worked into the evening.
“This is a community that values peace, and to see something like this in such a public space is shocking,” said Boulder Mayor Aaron Brockett, who praised first responders for their swift action. “We stand with the victims and their families as we begin to seek answers.”
Police said additional patrols and security precautions will be in place across Boulder in the coming days as a precautionary measure.
