FIFA President Gianni Infantino made a significant visit to Juba, the capital of South Sudan, on Tuesday to attend the inauguration of the Juba National Stadium. The 54-year-old football executive was accompanied by the country’s President, Salva Kiir Mayardit, and FA President Augustino Parek. They celebrated the occasion made possible by FIFA’s investment of nearly 7 million USD (£5.49 million) in the stadium’s development.
The inauguration coincided with a historic moment for South Sudanese football, as the country hosted its first-ever FIFA World Cup qualifier match at the newly inaugurated stadium. The ‘Bright Stars,’ South Sudan’s national football team, faced off against Sudan in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying match, ultimately losing 3-0. However, the result did not dampen the spirits of those in attendance, as the occasion marked a significant milestone for the nation.
Infantino expressed his joy and pride in being present for the historic day, stating, “Today, with football, we unite the world, we unite South Sudan, we unite Africa, and we unite all the people who love our game. We do this here, in your capital, in Juba. I am very happy today, and I’m very proud to assist on this historic day, June 11 2024, for a historic game.”
The inauguration of the Juba National Stadium and the hosting of the FIFA World Cup qualifier match represent a significant step forward for football in South Sudan. The investment made by FIFA in the stadium’s development is expected to have a lasting impact on the growth and development of the sport in the country.
As South Sudan continues to make strides in the world of football, the presence of FIFA President Gianni Infantino at the inauguration ceremony serves as a testament to the global football community’s support for the nation’s efforts to promote and develop the beautiful game.
