FIFA unveils AI-powered ‘Trionda’ ball for 2026 World Cup

Date:

ZURICH (BN24) — FIFA has unveiled the official match ball for the 2026 World Cup: the Adidas “Trionda”, a high-tech, AI-assisted football designed to support match officials and enhance player performance at the sport’s biggest global tournament.

The Trionda, named after the Italian phrase for “three waves,” reflects the three host nations, Canada, Mexico, and the United States, with a distinctive color scheme of red, green, blue, and white. The ball’s design includes national emblems: a red maple leaf for Canada, a green eagle for Mexico, and a blue star representing the United States.

Launched at a retail price of £119 ($160), the Trionda builds on the legacy of Adidas’ Connected Ball Technology, which first debuted in previous tournaments. For 2026, the system is powered by artificial intelligence and includes an internal chip that relays live data to the video assistant referee (VAR) system.

FIFA says the technology allows for precise, real-time tracking of the ball’s movement and player interactions, enabling faster, data-supported decisions on key moments like offside rulings and potential handballs. This represents a significant upgrade in the governing body’s effort to improve the accuracy and efficiency of officiating.

“This year’s ball carries the latest evolution of the brand’s Connected Ball Technology, now powered by AI, to deliver real-time data and insights that will shape everything from referee decisions to tactical analysis across all 104 matches,” Adidas said in a statement. “It is set to be the most advanced match ball Adidas has ever created.”

With a four-panel structure, deep seams, and debossed lines for improved aerodynamics, the Trionda is also engineered to provide optimal in-flight stability. Previous World Cup balls have promised this feature but have at times drawn criticism from players for unpredictability, particularly in tournaments after 2014.

Sam Handy, general manager at Adidas Football, described the Trionda as “the most visually playful FIFA World Cup ball we’ve ever created,” adding that it’s “a piece of craftsmanship built for the biggest stage, that makes you want to hold it, admire it, and above all, play with it.”

Promotional materials feature global stars including Jude Bellingham, Lionel Messi, and rising talent Lamine Yamal interacting with the new ball, highlighting Trionda’s blend of tradition, performance, and innovation ahead of the expanded 48-team tournament set to take place across North America.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup kicks off in June, with matches played across 16 cities in the three host nations.
