Maradona’s Children Unveil Plans for Grand Memorial Site in Argentina

The children of football legend Diego Maradona have unveiled plans for a grand memorial site dedicated to their father, the “M10 Memorial,” scheduled to open in 2025.

The 1,000-square-metre site will be located in the tourist area of Puerto Madero and is expected to be able to welcome up to one million visitors per year, according to its official website. “We want our father to be close to the love of the people, and to grant the wish of all those who want to bring him a flower,” said Maradona’s daughter Dalma during a presentation broadcast on YouTube.

Access to the memorial will be free for Argentines, but they can make a donation to the Maradona Foundation to have their photo placed on a “heritage wall.” The foundation, chaired by Dalma and four of Maradona’s other children, arose from a desire to “pay tribute to him (and) preserve his legacy.”

Earlier this month, a court authorized the transfer of Maradona’s remains from a cemetery to a mausoleum for this future memorial site, so that locals and tourists could visit “Argentina’s great idol.” Maradona died in November 2020 at the age of 60 while recovering from brain surgery, with his death ruled a heart attack.

The announcement of the grand “M10 Memorial” project reflects the enduring popularity and iconic status of Diego Maradona in Argentina and beyond. The massive site is intended to serve as a lasting tribute to the legendary footballer, allowing fans from around the world to pay their respects and celebrate his remarkable legacy.

The memorial’s scale and ambitious visitation targets demonstrate the deep connection Maradona maintained with the Argentine people, even after his passing. This landmark project aims to cement his place as one of the country’s most revered sporting figures for generations to come.
