U.S. Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene expressed outrage over newly revealed details that the FBI was “prepared to use deadly force” during its raid of Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort, suggesting that President Joe Biden had intentions to assassinate the former president.
A new court filing unsealed on Tuesday in the Trump classified documents case disclosed that federal agents were prepared to use “deadly force” during the 2022 raid. Greene, a staunch ally of Trump, reacted furiously to the news, alleging that Biden, his Department of Justice, and the FBI were ready to kill Trump.
“The Biden DOJ and FBI were planning to assassinate Pres Trump and gave the green light,” Greene wrote on X, formerly Twitter, on Tuesday. “I made sure that he knew.”
Trump, seemingly aware of Greene’s warning, responded with anger on his Truth Social account, stating that the “Illegal and Unconstitutional Raid of Mar-a-Lago” had “AUTHORIZED THE FBI TO USE DEADLY (LETHAL) FORCE.” He further claimed, “NOW, WE KNOW, FOR SURE, THAT JOE BIDEN IS A SERIOUS THREAT TO DEMOCRACY. HE IS MENTALLY UNFIT TO HOLD OFFICE – 25TH AMENDMENT!”
On the day of the raid, August 8, 2022, Trump was at his Bedminster golf club in New Jersey. He also sent out a fundraising email with the subject line “They were authorized to shoot me!”
Greene speculated on the extent of the raid’s permissions, asking, “Were they going to shoot [Secret Service] then Pres Trump, Melania, and Barron too?” She used the revelations to criticize Republican Speaker of the House Mike Johnson, accusing him of fully funding the DOJ and FBI and effectively tying Congress’s hands in holding them accountable.
“Speaker Mike Johnson fully funded the DOJ and FBI plus new building and tied our hands behind our backs to hold them accountable,” Greene wrote. “We have the power of the purse and Johnson has handed the purse to Chuck Schumer. All of this is unforgivable.”
Greene also called for the impeachment of FBI Director Christopher Wray and Attorney General Merrick Garland.
The raid on Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home resulted in the FBI seizing hundreds of documents containing classified information. Trump, 77, faces criminal charges for mishandling these documents after leaving office.
In a motion challenging the legality of the FBI’s raid, Trump’s legal team cited an “Operation Order” which included a “Policy Statement” on the use of deadly force. The filing revealed that agents planned to bring “Standard Issue Weapon[s],” “Ammo,” “Handcuffs,” and “medium and large sized bolt cutters,” while wearing “unmarked polo or collared shirts” and keeping “law enforcement equipment concealed.”
The agents conducted the raid from approximately 9 a.m. to 6:40 p.m. on August 8, 2022. Trump’s legal team has argued that the raid was unconstitutional, and Trump has pleaded not guilty to 37 criminal charges, some carrying penalties of up to 20 years in prison. He is accused of enlisting aides and lawyers to help hide records requested by officials.
Unsealed documents on Tuesday also revealed that additional classified documents were found in Trump’s bedroom months after the raid, as detailed in an unsealed opinion from Judge Beryl Howell in March 2023. The opinion stated that more classified documents were uncovered in November 2022 in a leased storage unit, in the office at Mar-a-Lago in December 2022, and later in Trump’s bedroom at Mar-a-Lago.
Judge Howell noted, “Notably, no excuse is provided as to how the former president could miss the classified-marked documents found in his bedroom at Mar-a-Lago.”
Earlier this month, District Judge Aileen Cannon, appointed by Trump, postponed the classified documents trial indefinitely, citing numerous unresolved pre-trial issues.
