Massive Crowds Camp Overnight as Homa Bay Hosts Historic Madaraka Day Celebrations

Date:

HOMA BAY, Kenya  — In an unprecedented display of patriotism and pride, thousands of Kenyans camped overnight to witness the Madaraka Day celebrations held in Homa Bay County for the first time since the nation’s independence. By dawn on Sunday, the Raila Odinga Stadium had already exceeded its 12,000-seat capacity, with crowds spilling into every corner of the venue.

Security forces worked through the night to manage the overwhelming attendance, as residents streamed in throughout Saturday night, eager not to miss what many described as a once-in-a-lifetime moment for the region.

By 10:00 p.m. on Saturday, the stadium terraces were packed, and by 9:00 a.m. Sunday, the scene had turned into a test of endurance, with some attendees resorting to sitting on the floor just to remain inside the grounds.

Meshack Wasonga, a resident of Homa Bay, was among the early arrivals. “Nilifika hapa saa mbili usiku,” he said, explaining he came at 8 p.m. to secure a spot. “Nilikuja mapema kwa sababu niliogopa sitapata nafasi kwa sababu ya umati wa watu.” His concern turned out to be justified, as thousands followed.

The anticipation was fueled by hours of entertainment, including musical and dramatic performances that carried through the night. “Tangu jana kumekuwa na burudani… Sijui hata iliisha saa ngapi,” said Gordon Otieno, smiling as he recalled the energetic overnight revelry.

Sunday’s celebration marked the first time Homa Bay County hosted a national holiday, making it a deeply symbolic occasion for the region. Many attendees viewed the event as an official acknowledgment of the county’s growing role in the national agenda.

“I came here to see the President. He has done a lot of work. We are thankful,” said George Omollo, who, like many, endured long hours of waiting to hear the head of state speak.

Joseph Omolo, who also arrived the night before, said the event demonstrated the government’s intent to bring development to the grassroots. “Tangu hii broad-based government ianze, maendeleo imeanza kufika kwa kaunti yetu kabisa,” he said, expressing hope that the pledges made during the celebration would materialize.

As the military parade and entertainment program concluded, security teams relaxed restrictions to allow even more residents to join the celebrations from outside the stadium. Many had waited for nearly nine hours, energized by patriotic songs, performances, and speeches.

The President’s address, which emphasized economic empowerment and inclusive development, was met with enthusiastic applause, reinforcing the belief among many locals that Homa Bay had finally taken its rightful place on the national stage.
