By In a shocking incident that occurred on Saturday in Okpagha-Ewuare, a community on the outskirts of Benin City, Edo State, Southwest Nigeria, a mother of four, Mrs. Nata Igbinovia, was brutally hacked to death by her neighbor and his son while attempting to intervene in a fight.
According to Patience, the deceased’s daughter, the tragic event unfolded when her mother tried to mediate a dispute between her cousin and the neighbors.
The suspects, identified as Philip Ayo and his son, resorted to using a knife and an axe to take Mrs. Igbinovia’s life.
Patience recounted the gruesome details of the attack, stating, “As he went to bring the small dagger, the son brought an axe that they usually use to split firewood.
As he wanted to stab my cousin’s brother, my mom intervened, and that’s when the knife ended up in her hand.
As my mom fell to the ground near their gate, the man took the axe and struck her back. While he was doing that, he took the opportunity to stab my mom in her side ribs.”
After committing the heinous act, the culprits fled the scene, leaving Mrs. Igbinovia’s lifeless body on the ground.
A nearby neighbor, upon hearing about the incident, brought a vehicle to transport the victim to the hospital.
Chidi Nwabuzor, the spokesperson for the state police command, confirmed the incident and stated that an investigation is ongoing.
He identified the suspect as Philip Ayo and confirmed that he had been arrested. However, when questioned about the involvement of the son in the suspected murder, Nwabuzor stated that the detectives would determine his role after the investigation.
“He will be charged in court shortly after the public holiday,” Nwabuzor added.
The brutal murder of Mrs. Nata Igbinovia has sent shockwaves through the community and has once again highlighted the issue of violence and crime in Nigeria.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the need for improved security measures and swift justice for the victims of such heinous crimes.
