MSNBC host Rachel Maddow has expressed grave concerns that she and other critics of former President Donald Trump could face imprisonment in internment camps if he were to win the 2024 presidential election.
In an interview with CNN senior media reporter Oliver Darcey, published in Monday’s Reliable Sources newsletter, Maddow shared her fears about being personally targeted by the Trump administration upon his potential return to power.
Darcey pointed out that Trump and his allies have openly discussed weaponizing the government to seek revenge against critics in media and politics, with some extremist allies even suggesting the jailing of fellow Americans. When asked if she worried about being a target as one of Trump’s most notable television critics, Maddow responded, “I’m worried about the country broadly if we put someone in power who is openly avowing that he plans to build camps to hold millions of people, and to ‘root out’ what he’s described in subhuman terms as his ‘enemy from within.'”
Maddow emphasized the importance of learning from history, stating that Trump is not joking when he makes such statements and that the consequences of electing someone with that kind of agenda have been seen before. She also expressed concern that some people might believe they will be safe or even benefit from siding with Trump, referencing former Vice President Mike Pence’s experience.
The MSNBC host further questioned whether the massive camps Trump has mentioned would be limited to migrants, suggesting that they could potentially be used to detain a broader range of individuals. “For that matter, what convinces you that these massive camps he’s planning are only for migrants? So, yes, I’m worried about me — but only as much as I’m worried about all of us,” Maddow stated.
In August, Maddow voiced her fear that Trump could become a dictator, or “president for life,” if he were to secure a second term in the White House. She questioned whether he would allow new elections to take place if the stakes were his freedom from prison.
Trump’s recent interview with television personality Dr. Phil McGraw has also raised concerns, as the former president stated that “revenge does take time” and can sometimes be justified.
Maddow has been a vocal critic of Trump since his election in 2016, with her shocked reaction to his victory over Hillary Clinton becoming one of the defining media moments of that election cycle. As the 2024 presidential race begins to take shape, her fears about the potential consequences of a second Trump term have once again come to the forefront of the political conversation.
