A shocking incident unfolded in Crete, Nebraska, as a 74-year-old man opened fire on his neighbors, injuring seven people, including four children, before taking his own life. The shooting, which occurred on Friday evening, is being investigated as a potentially racially motivated crime.
The alleged shooter, identified as Billy Booth, was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in his home across the street from where the shooting took place. The victims, all believed to be Hispanic, had previously reported Booth for making discriminatory statements such as “Go home” and “Speak English” prior to the attack.
The incident began around 4:33 p.m. when multiple 911 calls reported an active shooter situation on the 1200 block of Crestline Drive in Crete, a town in southeastern Nebraska. Responding officers could still hear gunshots upon arrival, including a final shot from Booth’s residence.
Approximately 15 people were at the victims’ home during the shooting, with most of them outside in the yard. The victims ranged in age from 3 to 43 years old. Six were initially hospitalized, with a seventh realizing their injury later. As of the latest update, four victims have been released from the hospital, while three remain under care, including two children. All are expected to survive.
Nebraska State Patrol Col. John Bolduc stated that preliminary investigations indicate all rounds were fired from inside Booth’s house. There was no verbal contact between the suspect and victims immediately before the shooting.
Crete Police Chief Gary Young Jr. revealed a history of complaints between Booth and the victims’ families dating back to 2021. Most complaints came from Booth regarding “driving behavior” and quality-of-life issues in the neighborhood. The victims had reported Booth’s discriminatory behavior once, but declined to escalate the matter at the time.
Authorities are now investigating the possibility of racial motivation behind the attack. “Certainly the context of ‘Go home’ and ‘Speak English’ lends itself to that,” Chief Young noted. However, a definitive motive has yet to be established.
The Nebraska State Patrol initially warned the public to stay clear of the area during the active situation. They later confirmed that the threat had been resolved and there was no further danger to the public.
As the investigation continues, authorities are urging anyone with information about the case to come forward. This tragic event has shaken the community of Crete and raised concerns about racial tensions and gun violence in the area.
