Nigeria: Flood Cuts Off Kano-Maiduguri Highway, Governor Mohammed Urges Federal Government to Intervene

Date:

A severe flood has caused extensive damage to the Kano-Maiduguri Highway, a critical route that connects Nigeria’s Northwest and Northeast regions. The floodwaters have created a massive crater in the middle of the road, forcing motorists to seek alternative routes and disrupting the flow of goods and services across these vital areas.

The impact of this disruption has prompted Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed to visit the site to assess the extent of the damage firsthand. During his visit, Governor Mohammed emphasized the importance of the highway as a key link between the two regions, underlining its role in the economic and social life of the area.

Speaking to journalists on Thursday, Governor Mohammed called on the Federal Government to take immediate action to repair the damaged road. He stressed that restoring the highway is essential for the transportation of goods and services and for the benefit of the citizens who rely on this route for their daily commute.

“This is a major highway, the Northeast highway, and the dual carriageways have been completely washed away. We are calling on the federal government to assist. We will report this issue to Abuja through the Controller of Works,” Governor Mohammed stated.

He further warned that if the Federal Government fails to address the problem promptly, the state government would have no choice but to implement its own remedial or permanent measures, as was done during the last rainy season when similar issues arose.

Bauchi State has been severely affected by flooding this year, with numerous local government areas experiencing widespread destruction. The flooding has caused not only infrastructural damage but also significant disruptions to the lives of residents, exacerbating the challenges faced by the state.

Governor Mohammed’s appeal to the Federal Government highlights the urgency of the situation and the need for swift intervention to prevent further deterioration of the highway, which is crucial for maintaining economic stability and connectivity in the region.
