Nigeria: Niger State Police Arrest 11 Suspects in Burning, Looting at Tafa LGA Secretariat Attack Amid Nationwide Protests

The Niger State Police Command has apprehended 11 suspects in connection with the recent attack on the Tafa Local Government Area (LGA) Secretariat. This incident occurred amid widespread nationwide protests, resulting in extensive property damage, vandalism, and arson.

According to SP Wasiu Abiodun, spokesperson for the Niger State Police Command, the attack took place on Thursday, August 1, 2024. During the assault, two vehicles were set ablaze, and several others were vandalized, with valuable items reportedly stolen by the attackers.

Following the nationwide protest slated to commence today, 1st August 2024, unfortunately, this morning at about 0930hrs, some miscreants from Tafa area of Kagarko LGA of Kaduna State and those of Hayin-Diko Gurara LGA of Niger State mobilized and stormed Tafa LGA Secretariat of Niger State located along Abuja-Kaduna expressway, Sabon-Wuse Niger State,” explained SP Wasiu Abiodun.

The attackers vandalized the secretariat, partially setting it on fire. Alongside the damage to vehicles, they looted valuables from the site. Swift action by the police and other security agencies resulted in the arrest of 11 suspects. These individuals were found with various weapons, including firearms. While some managed to flee the scene, several stolen items have been recovered.

Security forces also responded to a blockade on the Kaduna-Abuja expressway, successfully dispersing the hoodlums to restore order. “Presently, the expressway has been reopened for motorists, and there is a free flow of traffic along the highway. However, an investigation into the violent act has commenced with a view to arresting other fleeing miscreants,” added SP Abiodun.

In response to the unrest, the police have issued a warning to the public, parents, and residents, urging caution and advising against violent demonstrations and the destruction of public property. The statement emphasized the command’s zero-tolerance policy for such disruptive actions, highlighting the commitment to ensuring public safety and maintaining order.
