In a shocking incident, nine people were injured when a shooter opened fire at a splash pad in Rochester Hills, a Detroit suburb, where families had gathered to escape the summer heat on Saturday. Among the injured were two young children and their mother. Law enforcement later tracked the suspect to a home, where the man died by a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to authorities.
Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard reported during a news conference that an 8-year-old boy was shot in the head and is in critical condition. The boy’s mother also sustained critical injuries, with gunshot wounds to her abdomen and leg. The boy’s 4-year-old brother was in stable condition after being shot in the leg.
Initial reports suggested that as many as 10 people had been wounded in the shooting, but the number was revised after authorities checked with area hospitals. The other six victims, all aged 30 or older, were reported to be in stable condition. Among them were a husband-and-wife couple and a 78-year-old man.
The shooting took place just after 5 p.m. at a city park featuring a recreation area with a nonslip surface where visitors can activate sprays and fountains of water to play in. According to Sheriff Bouchard, the attack appeared to be random, with the shooter driving up to the park, walking to the splash pad, and firing as many as 28 times, pausing multiple times to reload.
