Over 20 Medical Students Kidnapped in Benue State, Nigeria

More than 20 medical and dental students, along with a house officer, have been kidnapped by gunmen in Benue State, Nigeria. The incident occurred on August 18, 2024, around 5:30 PM in the Otukpo area as the students were traveling to Enugu for the Federation of Catholic Medical and Dental Students (FECAMDS) annual convention.

The victims are reportedly from the University of Maiduguri and the University of Jos. Benue State Police Command spokesperson, SP Catherine Anene, confirmed the abduction, stating, “Yes, the report of the kidnapping is true. It was received between 5:30 p.m. and 6:00 p.m., and an investigation is ongoing.”

As of Friday, August 19, no official demand for ransom or conditions for the students’ release had been made.

This incident is part of a troubling trend of kidnappings in Benue State and across Nigeria. Recent examples include the kidnapping of two female students from Joseph Sarwuan University of Agriculture in May 2024, the abduction of three staff members including the acting Rector of Benue State Polytechnic in July 2024, and the kidnapping of ten people at the Taraba/Benue border community in March 2024.

The rise in kidnappings underscores the urgent need for enhanced security measures in Nigeria. Criminal groups often target individuals and groups, demanding hefty ransoms, which has led to increased fear and insecurity among communities.

As authorities continue their investigation into this latest abduction, concerns grow about the safety of students and travelers in the region. The incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by Nigerian security forces in combating organized crime and ensuring the safety of citizens.

The situation remains developing, with local and national authorities expected to provide updates as the investigation progresses. This latest kidnapping serves as a stark reminder of the persistent security issues plaguing parts of Nigeria and the need for comprehensive strategies to address the root causes of such criminal activities.
