Police Fatally Shoot Teen Armed with Replica Handgun in Upstate New York

A heartbreaking incident unfolded in upstate New York as police shot and killed a teenage boy who was fleeing while brandishing what appeared to be a realistic firearm, authorities revealed on Saturday.

Utica Police Chief Mark Williams addressed the media early Saturday, detailing how the shooting occurred Friday night after officers stopped two youths in the city. One of the youths attempted to escape on foot and reportedly pointed what appeared to be a handgun at the officers during a ground struggle. In response, an officer discharged a single shot, striking the 13-year-old Asian male in the chest.

Authorities recovered a replica GLOCK 17 Gen 5 handgun with a detachable magazine from the scene. Lieutenant Michael Curley emphasized that while the replica bore GLOCK markings and serial numbers, it only fired pellets or BB’s, underscoring its realistic appearance.

Chief Williams assured transparency in the investigation, announcing plans to release the identities of the officer involved, along with photos of the weapon. The department intends to provide a comprehensive report and full body camera footage from the incident over the coming days.

During the news conference, emotional responses from the community, including the youth’s family and supporters, underscored the gravity of the situation. Mayor Michael Galime reiterated the city’s commitment to transparency, promising openness in addressing community concerns.

The New York State Attorney General’s Office will lead the investigation to determine the justification of the shooting, with the involved officers placed on administrative leave with pay pending further inquiries. Chief Williams also noted the department’s internal review to assess adherence to protocols and training.

Chief Williams extended heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased, acknowledging the tragic nature of the incident for all parties involved. The community’s demand for clarity and accountability underscores the importance of a thorough and transparent investigation.
