WINDSOR, Colo. (BN24) — Tyler Boebert, the eldest son of Republican Rep. Lauren Boebert, has been cited for misdemeanor child abuse stemming from an incident earlier this month, according to local law enforcement and the Weld County District Attorney’s office. The Colorado congresswoman, however, called the episode a “miscommunication,” emphasizing that no injury or physical abuse occurred.

The Windsor Police Department issued the citation on July 11, reportedly for criminal negligence involving no physical harm. While full details of the incident have not been made public, the charge carries potential legal implications for Tyler Boebert, who is already serving a probationary sentence for unrelated charges tied to a February 2024 arrest.
In a statement to Newsweek, Rep. Boebert, a Republican representing Colorado’s 3rd Congressional District, said Child Protective Services had met with the family and determined that the household remained safe for the children. “As the citation states, there was absolutely no injury or physical abuse involved,” Boebert said. “This event stems from a miscommunication on monitoring my young grandson that recently led to him getting out of our house.”
The 18-year-old father of one had previously pleaded guilty to a count of identity theft in a case involving vehicle trespassing and stolen credit cards in Rifle, Colorado. He received a two-year deferred sentence, 80 hours of community service, and was ordered to pay court costs. As part of that plea deal, 21 other charges, including multiple felonies, were dropped. The current misdemeanor citation raises questions about whether the new allegation could impact his probationary status.

The summons issued on July 11 remains the only court document filed in the case so far. Westword, a Colorado-based news outlet, first reported the citation, citing confirmation from the district attorney’s office. The Windsor Police Department has not yet released the full report, and no formal complaint has been filed in court.
Tyler Boebert is expected to appear in Weld County Court on September 8.
Rep. Boebert, who has often drawn national headlines for her outspoken conservative views, acknowledged her son’s troubled past in a prior statement last year, saying, “As an adult and father, Tyler will take responsibility for his actions and should be held accountable for poor decisions just like any other citizen.”
