Russian TV Chef Arrested in France Over Alleged Olympic Disruption Plot

Date:

French authorities have arrested a Russian TV chef in his 40s, suspected of being a spy involved in a “large-scale” plot to disrupt the Paris Olympics. The arrest, made on Sunday in central Paris, comes just days before the Games’ opening ceremony and highlights the intense security concerns surrounding the event.

The suspect, who moved to France in 2010 and worked on cooking TV shows, was reportedly under surveillance for months. During a raid on his apartment, authorities uncovered damning evidence, including a document with information about a Russian special forces unit linked to the FSB and an ID card suggesting his connection to an FSB unit.

A crucial piece of evidence came from an intercepted phone call on May 8, where the suspect allegedly told a Russian intelligence handler, “The French are going to have an opening ceremony like there has never been before.” This ominous statement prompted immediate action from French intelligence.

The unnamed man faces charges of “sharing intelligence with a foreign power with a view to provoking hostilities in France,” which could result in up to 30 years imprisonment. This arrest is part of a broader effort by French authorities to thwart several plots aimed at disrupting the Olympics.

In response to these threats, Paris 2024 is set to become the most heavily guarded Games in history. Over 60,000 cops and soldiers will be deployed, supported by drones, helicopters, and AI surveillance. French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin revealed that over one million people have been screened ahead of the Olympics.

This incident underscores the complex security challenges facing the Paris Olympics, from potential terrorist attacks to protests. As the world’s attention turns to Paris, authorities remain vigilant, determined to ensure the safety of athletes and spectators alike in what promises to be a tense and closely watched global event.
