According to a news release from state authorities, six passengers were pronounced dead at the scene, while a seventh victim succumbed to injuries at a local hospital. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) stated on social media platform X that the crash was caused by tire failure, adding a critical detail to the ongoing investigation.
Warren County Coroner Doug Huskey confirmed that among the deceased were a 6-year-old boy and his 16-year-old sister, identified by their mother. Authorities are working diligently to identify the remaining victims, underscoring the devastating impact on families and the local community.
The accident occurred Saturday morning when the westbound bus veered off Interstate 20 and overturned near Bovina. Emergency responders rushed to the scene, transporting 37 injured passengers to hospitals in Vicksburg and Jackson for treatment. Mississippi Highway Patrol spokesperson Cpl. Craig James stated, “Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with the families of those who lost their lives and all individuals affected by this tragic incident.” He added that a thorough investigation is underway to determine all factors contributing to the crash.
