Shia LaBeouf Arrested in New Orleans After Alleged Assault During Lundi Gras Celebrations

Date:

NEW ORLEANS (BN24) — Actor Shia LaBeouf was arrested early Tuesday in New Orleans on two counts of simple battery after police said he allegedly assaulted two men during Lundi Gras festivities in the city’s French Quarter.

The New Orleans Police Department confirmed the arrest in a statement provided to ABC News, outlining allegations that the 39-year-old actor became aggressive outside a business on Royal Street.

Officers were dispatched shortly after 12:45 a.m. on Feb. 17, 2026, to the 1400 block of Royal Street in response to a disturbance involving two adult male victims who reported being struck, police said.

According to authorities, LaBeouf was allegedly creating a disruption inside a Royal Street establishment and became increasingly confrontational. A staff member attempted to escort him from the premises. Once outside, investigators allege, the actor struck one of the men multiple times with closed fists.

Police said LaBeouf briefly left the scene but later returned and continued behaving aggressively. Several bystanders attempted to restrain him in hopes that he would depart without further incident. Instead, authorities allege, he again punched the same individual in the upper body before striking another man in the nose.

Officers indicated that LaBeouf was subdued and held until law enforcement arrived. He was transported to a local hospital for treatment of unspecified injuries before being booked on two counts of simple battery, the department said.

Under Louisiana law, simple battery is defined as the intentional use of force or violence upon another person without the victim’s consent. The charge is generally considered a misdemeanor but can carry penalties including fines and jail time if convicted.

The alleged altercation unfolded during Lundi Gras, a major prelude to Mardi Gras celebrations that draw thousands of visitors to New Orleans’ historic French Quarter each year. Royal Street, known for its galleries, music venues and nightlife, is often heavily trafficked during the annual festivities.

Representatives for LaBeouf did not immediately respond to a request for comment from ABC News.

LaBeouf, widely recognized for his roles in blockbuster films including the “Transformers” franchise, has faced legal and personal challenges in the past, including prior arrests related to disorderly conduct and public intoxication in other cities. However, each incident has unfolded under different circumstances, and no conclusions have been reached regarding the current allegations beyond the charges filed.

The timing of the incident, coinciding with one of the busiest celebrations in New Orleans, may add complexity to the case. Lundi Gras events often involve heightened security presence due to crowd size, alcohol consumption and the city’s dense nightlife environment.

Law enforcement agencies typically increase patrols across the French Quarter during Mardi Gras season. Officials have not indicated whether additional witnesses or surveillance footage contributed to the decision to charge the actor.

If the allegations are substantiated in court, LaBeouf could face penalties consistent with Louisiana’s simple battery statute. Legal analysts note that misdemeanor battery charges can lead to probation, fines or short-term incarceration, depending on prior record and the severity of the conduct.

The case also places renewed attention on celebrity conduct in high-profile public spaces. Incidents involving well-known figures during major public events often generate intense media scrutiny, particularly when video footage or bystander accounts circulate online.

For New Orleans authorities, maintaining public order during Mardi Gras season is a priority. Officials have repeatedly emphasized zero tolerance for violence during the celebrations, given the scale of attendance and economic significance of the festival to the city.

While the charges remain allegations pending judicial proceedings, the arrest adds another chapter to LaBeouf’s complicated public narrative. In recent years, the actor has sought professional reinvention, appearing in independent film projects and speaking publicly about personal struggles and rehabilitation efforts.

An arrest during a globally recognized cultural celebration may intensify public attention and potentially affect ongoing professional engagements. Studios and producers often weigh reputational considerations when evaluating collaborations with actors facing active legal proceedings.

From a broader lens, the incident underscores the intersection of celebrity status, public accountability and law enforcement response during high-density events. High-profile arrests can amplify scrutiny not only on the individual involved but also on how local authorities manage crowd safety and conflict resolution during large-scale gatherings.

As of Tuesday, no court date had been announced. The case is expected to proceed through the Orleans Parish criminal justice system, where prosecutors will determine how to move forward.

LaBeouf remains presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
