LONDON — Tottenham Hotspur secured a commanding 4-0 victory over Everton in Premier League action on Saturday, with Son Heung-min scoring twice to lead the north London club to their first win of the season.
The result extends Everton’s winless streak against Tottenham to eight matches and leaves the Merseyside club without a point after two games of the new campaign.
Tottenham, under new manager Ange Postecoglou, dominated from the outset, forcing Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford into three saves within the first 15 minutes.
The breakthrough came when Yves Bissouma, returning from a club-imposed suspension, rifled in a shot off the underside of the crossbar following a pass from Dejan Kulusevski. It marked Bissouma’s first goal for Tottenham since joining the club in 2022.
Everton’s woes deepened when Pickford’s poor touch allowed Son to steal possession and roll the ball into an empty net, doubling Tottenham’s lead before the 30-minute mark.
Despite a brief period of pressure from Everton just before halftime, highlighted by a series of dangerous set-pieces, Tottenham maintained control of the match.
In the second half, Everton manager Sean Dyche introduced new signings Jesper Lindstrøm and Iliman Ndiaye in an attempt to spark the attack, but to no avail.
Tottenham extended their lead when Cristian Romero headed in James Maddison’s corner, the ball going in off the crossbar for the third goal.
The final goal showcased Tottenham’s attacking prowess, with defender Micky van de Ven making a box-to-box run before setting up Son for his second goal of the match.
Postecoglou expressed satisfaction with his team’s performance: “We showed great intensity from the start and maintained it throughout the match. Son’s brace and Bissouma’s goal were particular highlights, but it was a strong team effort overall.”
Dyche, meanwhile, acknowledged Everton’s difficult start to the season: “We’ve had a tough opening two fixtures, but that’s the Premier League. We need to regroup quickly and find our form in the coming weeks.”
The result leaves Everton at the bottom of the Premier League table, having conceded seven goals without reply in their opening two matches. Tottenham, conversely, moves into the top four with four points from two games.
Son Heung-min’s performance, netting two goals, underlines his importance to Tottenham’s attack, while Yves Bissouma’s return and goal provide a boost to Postecoglou’s midfield options.
As the Premier League season unfolds, Tottenham’s dominant display suggests they could be contenders for a top-four finish, while Everton face the challenge of turning their form around to avoid another relegation battle.
