A tragic accident struck South Korea’s firefighting efforts on Sunday as a helicopter battling a raging wildfire in the southeastern city of Daegu crashed, killing its pilot, according to reports from Yonhap News Agency.

The chopper was actively engaged in extinguishing a blaze when it went down, marking a devastating loss as emergency crews continue to combat what has become the country’s worst wildfire disaster in recent memory.

The pilot’s death adds to the growing toll of a national emergency that has overwhelmed firefighting resources and emergency services.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation as authorities work to determine whether extreme weather conditions or mechanical failure played a role.
