Parts of California were left shaken Monday afternoon after a powerful earthquake struck the southern part of the state.
At around 1 pm, a magnitude 4.9 earthquake hit around 13 miles northeast of Barstow in the Mojave Desert, sending quakes as far as Los Angeles and Las Vegas. There were no immediate reports of major damage from the shocks, which measured around 4.89 miles deep, according to the Southern California Earthquake Data Center.
Almost immediately, people took to social media to share that they’d felt the afternoon earthquake. “Felt it here in Vegas,” one user posted to X. “Same, east Hollywood,” another said. “Felt it here in Glendale, quite a jolt,” a third chimed in, while a fourth wrote, “I felt it in California City. Rumbling like being on a raft in the ocean.”
“We felt it in LA County. Just a little shaking. No damage,” another said. “My kids totally failed the ‘earthquake drill.’ We’re going to have to practice.”
Many southern California residents appeared unfazed by the quake and its aftershocks, with many saying they didn’t feel anything. “I haven’t felt the last two earthquakes. I don’t know if this is because I live in a better building than before, or if I’ve just become a heavier sleeper,” one X user wrote. “Did I sleep through an earthquake or something, never felt it,” another said.
Local government officials also took to social media, asking residents to report where they felt the earthquake.
