Tragedy struck in Mexico on Wednesday when high winds caused a stage to collapse at a presidential campaign rally, resulting in the deaths of nine people. The incident occurred during a rally for candidate Jorge Álvarez Máynez in a city near Monterrey.
The terrifying moment was captured on camera as Álvarez Máynez and his supporters energized the crowd. A sudden gust of wind tore down a large video screen at the back of the stage, causing chaos as the scaffolding and screen crashed down. Álvarez Máynez and his team were seen scrambling for cover as the structure fell.
With the winds continuing to rage, attendees frantically sought safety under the collapsed tent structure. Samuel García, Governor of Mexico’s Nuevo Leon state, confirmed the deaths in a post on X, noting that one of the victims was a minor. Initially, 54 people were reported injured, with some in stable condition and others undergoing surgery. The injury toll has since risen to 121.
Authorities cordoned off the area, with heavily armed security personnel closely monitoring the situation. In response to the tragedy, Álvarez Máynez announced the suspension of all campaign activities as a gesture of solidarity.
