A 16-year-old boy was fatally shot in the head and thigh in a shocking incident that occurred in broad daylight in downtown Manhattan on Tuesday.
The shooting took place just before 2:30 pm on Spring Street, near the Dominick Hotel, in the bustling shopping district of Soho.
According to police sources, the victim was with his friends in a public courtyard when a conflict erupted with another group of teens.
The New York Daily News reports that the fight initially began between two groups of girls, and the victim attempted to intervene before he was shot.
The suspect, who is believed to have fled the scene on a Citibike along with another individual, took out a gun and shot the victim once in the back of the head and twice in the leg, as reported by NBC New York.
Law enforcement sources told the New York Post that the shooting might have been “school-related,” as it occurred near Broome Street Academy.
Investigators are currently looking into whether any of the teens involved attended the school.
The critically injured teen was rushed to Bellevue Hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later, according to an NYPD spokesperson who spoke to DailyMail.com.
Police are currently searching for at least two suspects in connection with the shooting. Officers arrived at the scene after receiving a 911 call and found the victim unconscious, having sustained gunshot wounds to his head and thigh.
The tragic incident has left the community in shock, as it occurred in one of the city’s most popular and typically safe neighborhoods. Authorities are urging anyone with information related to the shooting to come forward and assist in the ongoing investigation.
