RIEDLINGEN, Germany (BN24) — At least three people were killed and several others seriously injured after a passenger train derailed on Friday evening near Riedlingen, southwest Germany, authorities said.

The Deutsche Bahn-operated train, carrying about 100 passengers, was traveling on a 90-kilometer route between Sigmaringen and Ulm when two of its carriages derailed in a forested area at approximately 18:10 local time (17:10 BST), according to German news agency dpa.
Police in Ulm confirmed that the derailment resulted in three fatalities, with multiple passengers sustaining serious injuries. The cause of the crash remains unclear, though Deutsche Bahn cited “unknown reasons” and noted that a storm had passed through the area shortly before the incident.
Images from the scene showed train carriages toppled on their sides, emergency responders attending to victims, and fallen trees scattered around the crash site.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz expressed his condolences in a message on social media platform X, mourning the victims and extending sympathy to their families. Merz said he was in close contact with the interior and transport ministers, urging full support for emergency services involved in the rescue efforts.
Deutsche Bahn stated that the company’s thoughts were with those affected and acknowledged the ongoing investigation to determine the precise circumstances behind the derailment.
