US Women’s Soccer Advances to Olympic Semifinal with 1-0 Win Over Japan | Paris 2024

Date:

Trinity Rodman’s extra-time goal propelled the United States women’s soccer team to a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Japan in the Olympic quarterfinals at Paris 2024. The win secures Team USA’s spot in the semifinals, where they will face either Germany or Canada.

Rodman’s decisive strike, her third goal of the tournament, came in stoppage time of the first extra period. The young forward’s shot to the top of the far post finally broke the deadlock in a tightly contested match that had remained scoreless through regulation time.

Under the guidance of new coach Emma Hayes, the US team entered the knockout stage undefeated, having outscored opponents 9-2 in the group stage. However, Japan’s steady defense proved a formidable challenge throughout the match, forcing the Americans to dig deep for the win.

US goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher played a crucial role, making important saves, particularly against Mina Tanaka in the first half. Mallory Swanson, the team’s leading scorer with three goals in the tournament, had several opportunities in the second half but was unable to convert.

The match, played at a packed Parc des Princes, drew notable spectators including former US stars Megan Rapinoe and Mia Hamm, as well as rapper Snoop Dogg. The electric atmosphere added to the tension of the closely fought contest.

In terms of team selection, the US made one change to its starting lineup, with Korbin Albert replacing Sam Coffey in midfield due to yellow card accumulation. Forward Jaedyn Shaw was also made available after missing the first three games with a leg injury, providing additional options for Hayes.

This victory continues the United States’ quest for a fifth Olympic gold medal in women’s soccer. The team will now prepare to face the winner of the Germany-Canada match in the semifinals, with their sights set on reaching the gold medal game.

As the tournament progresses, the US team’s resilience and ability to secure tough wins will be crucial in their pursuit of Olympic glory. With the knockout stages intensifying, each match becomes increasingly significant in determining the eventual champions of the Paris 2024 women’s soccer tournament.
