USA Tops Medal Table at Paris 2024 Olympics, Edging Out China

The United States has secured the top spot in the medal table at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, concluding on Sunday, August 11. The U.S. and China both finished with 40 gold medals, but the Americans claimed first place due to their superior silver medal count of 44 compared to China’s 27.

The U.S. women’s basketball team secured the final gold medal of the Games, defeating host nation France in a closely contested match.

Great Britain finished seventh, down from fourth in Tokyo, but increased their overall medal count to 65. The Netherlands surpassed Britain on the final day to claim sixth place.

Russian athletes competed as Individual Neutral Athletes (AIN) due to the country’s ban following the invasion of Ukraine. Their medals were not counted in the official table.

The International Olympic Committee officially ranks nations first by gold medals, then silver, and finally bronze. This method has been a point of contention in past Games, with some countries and media outlets occasionally presenting alternative rankings based on total medal count.

This marks the 19th time the United States has topped the summer Olympic medal table, continuing their dominance that has seen them finish first in six of the last seven Games since Atlanta 1996.
