A horrific case of domestic violence has shocked the community of Dickson, Tennessee, as 28-year-old Zachary Mowel faces multiple charges including attempted first-degree murder and aggravated arson after allegedly attacking his wife Tessa on July 1, 2024. According to court documents and a press release from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, Mowel is accused of stabbing his wife multiple times, dousing her with gasoline, and setting their home on fire.
Authorities responded to reports of a fire at the couple’s residence, where they found Tessa Mowel severely injured with multiple stab wounds to her upper back and chest. Zachary Mowel reportedly approached officers at the scene, stating, “I did it. It was me.” He was immediately taken into custody.
The victim, who is currently receiving treatment at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, reportedly told police that the incident stemmed from a fight with her husband that turned violent. A GoFundMe page set up by the victim’s twin sister, Tori Ila Elizabeth Trotter, provides additional details about the attack and Tessa’s current condition.
According to the GoFundMe, Tessa was stabbed nine times in total, including once in the back with a kitchen knife and eight additional times in the neck, chest, and back. The page also alleges that Zachary beat her over 30 times in the face before pouring gasoline on her and setting her on fire. Tragically, the couple’s two sons, aged five and eight, were reportedly present during the attack.
Tessa’s injuries are extensive, including third-degree burns covering her right leg, broken ribs, a collapsed lung, and paralysis from the waist down. Her sister states that Tessa faces a long road to recovery and will likely be unable to work for over a year.
The victim’s mother, Tina Trotter, spoke to local news outlet WSMV, expressing shock and disbelief over the incident. She revealed that two good Samaritans who saw smoke coming from the house rushed in to extinguish the fire, likely saving Tessa’s life.
Zachary Mowel is currently being held at the Dickson County Jail on a $765,000 bond. He faces charges of attempted first-degree murder, aggravated arson, aggravated assault (domestic-related), and domestic assault.
