Russian Soldier Kills Fellow Serviceman and Three Civilians in Crimea

Date:

A Russian soldier opened fire on fellow servicemen in Crimea before turning his weapon on civilians, killing four people in total, the Moscow installed governor of Sevastopol said Tuesday.

Mikhail Razvozhayev said the soldier first shot at fellow servicemen, killing one and wounding another, before shooting and killing three civilians and wounding three more people. He said the attacker had since been detained.

No motive for the shooting has been made public. Razvozhayev said the circumstances and causes of the incident were still being established and urged residents to remain calm and avoid spreading rumors.

What We Know So Far

Officials gave slightly differing accounts of where the shooting took place, with some reports describing it broadly as occurring in Crimea and others specifying the village of Khmelnitskoye near Sevastopol. The three civilians killed were identified by age as 71, 64 and 59, though sources differed on gender, with one report describing the 64 year old victim as a woman and another not specifying gender for any of the three.

Razvozhayev said medical personnel were doing everything possible to save those who were wounded, including a soldier. He did not disclose further details about what triggered the attack.

An exiled Russian news outlet, Agentstvo, said it had identified the alleged shooter using a screenshot from a local chat group as 21 year old Maxim Alistratov, from Russia’s Saratov region. That identification could not be independently verified. The same chat group reportedly warned residents that the soldier had fled into nearby woods after opening fire on fellow servicemen, though it was unclear whether that account referred to events before or after his eventual detention.

What Authorities Are Saying

Razvozhayev confirmed the shooting and casualty figures in posts on the social media platform Telegram, saying the attacker had been detained and that authorities were working to establish the full circumstances of the incident. He offered no additional detail on a possible motive.

Why This Matters

The shooting adds to a wave of violence and casualties reported in Crimea and along Russia’s Black Sea coast in recent days, a pattern authorities have linked to the broader war between Russia and Ukraine even though Tuesday’s shooting itself does not appear directly connected to combat operations.

Crimea, a heavily militarized peninsula on the Black Sea, was seized and annexed by Russia from Ukraine in 2014, a move not recognized by most of the international community. The territory has increasingly become a target of Ukrainian strikes as the war has progressed, a dynamic that has heightened tension and scrutiny around any violent incident involving military personnel stationed there, including one, like Tuesday’s, that appears to stem from an internal dispute rather than direct combat.

Other Violence Along the Black Sea Coast

Russian officials reported additional casualties elsewhere in the region this week. Moscow installed Crimea governor Sergey Aksyonov said Monday that four people were killed in a Ukrainian strike on annexed Crimea.

Separately, Krasnodar region governor Venyamin Kondratyev said a drone attack struck the Russian resort town of Arkhipo Osipovka, on the Black Sea coast east of Crimea, killing six people, including three children. Unverified social media footage appeared to show a drone crashing near a crowded beach as tourists looked on from the shore and water.

Ukraine regularly launches large numbers of drones into Russian territory at night, a practice Kyiv has described as retaliation for Russian drone and missile barrages against Ukrainian cities. Both Crimea and Russia’s Black Sea coast are popular summer destinations for Russian tourists, raising the potential for civilian casualties as strikes continue during the peak travel season.

What Happens Next

Russian authorities have not indicated when they expect to conclude their investigation into the Sevastopol shooting or to release further details about a motive. Confirmation of the alleged shooter’s identity remains outstanding, pending independent verification beyond the initial claim from Agentstvo.

Given the recent pattern of strikes along the Black Sea coast, further casualties from drone attacks and cross border strikes are likely as the broader conflict between Russia and Ukraine continues into the summer travel season.
